Amazon enters the Irish market

Daniel Pawłowski · Amazonway · · ok. 3 min read

According to the announcement of 10 December 2024, Amazon decided on another step in the development of its business: opening the platform on the Irish market at the beginning of 2025. This decision matters enormously not only for the marketplace itself, but also for Irish consumers and entrepreneurs. What does it mean for the eCommerce market in Ireland? What changes will this expansion bring?

Amazon enters the Irish market: what does it mean?

Ireland is a dynamically growing eCommerce market that has gained importance especially in recent years. Although Amazon was present in Ireland before, thanks to the logistics centre in Dublin and the customer service centre in Cork, opening the full Amazon platform in the country brings a range of benefits for consumers. The Irish will now be able to use Amazon’s full offer, including local delivery options via An Post (the Irish postal service), no additional customs duties, prices in euro and faster order fulfilment.

With this expansion Amazon will adapt its offer to the needs of Irish customers, giving easier access to products previously bought on Amazon.co.uk, which carried higher transport costs, partly due to customs duties.

Benefits for consumers

As the eCommerce market leader, Amazon offers its users a range of benefits that will now also be available in Ireland:

  • Wide selection: access to millions of products across categories, including electronics, books, clothing, cosmetics and home appliances.
  • Attractive prices and promotions: Amazon is famous for competitive prices and regular sales such as Black Friday or Cyber Monday, which will now also be available locally.
  • Fast delivery: thanks to the development of Amazon’s logistics infrastructure, waiting times for ordered products in Ireland will be much shorter, with options such as same-day or next-business-day delivery.

Impact on Irish entrepreneurs

Consumers are not the only ones who will benefit from the launch of Amazon.ie on the Irish market. Entrepreneurs and sellers can also count on new opportunities. Irish companies, especially small and medium-sized ones, will gain access to an international sales platform, allowing them to reach a wider circle of consumers around the world.

Competition for local online stores

One effect of the Amazon.ie launch on the Irish market will also be greater competition for local online stores. While Amazon undoubtedly offers convenience and a wide range, companies such as ARGOS will have to face the global giant and may look for new strategies to attract customers. Local stores will need to focus on unique products, better customer service or solutions tailored to the specific needs of the Irish market.

Challenges and threats

Although Amazon brings enormous benefits, its presence on the Irish market also comes with challenges. It may lead to further concentration of the eCommerce market, which in the long run will affect competitiveness. Large corporations such as Amazon often rely on vast resources and technology, which can put smaller companies in a difficult position.

Another important aspect is the impact on local brick-and-mortar stores, which may lose some customers, especially those who prefer shopping online. To face this competition, local sellers must show innovation, offering something Amazon cannot deliver: for example personalised service, local products or a better shopping experience.

Summary

The launch of Amazon.ie on the Irish market is undoubtedly a big change that will open new possibilities for consumers and entrepreneurs alike. For consumers it means greater access to a wide range of products, better prices and faster delivery. Irish companies, in turn, can gain the ability to reach global markets. However, with the arrival of the eCommerce giant come challenges as well: greater competition, the need to adapt to a changing market and threats to local stores. Everything suggests that Amazon’s presence in Ireland will significantly shape the country’s eCommerce market in the coming years.
